Before: The existing garden was derelict following extensive
building work carried out on the house. The irregular shape of the plot,
together with a steep slope along the rear boundary and a large number of trees
(with preservation orders on them) made it a difficult space to work with. The
client wanted a smart, contemporary garden which would enhance the extended and
remodelled house as well as providing outdoor living space and somewhere for the
children to play.
Design
Solution: Decking was used
to create an outdoor living space leading out from the sitting room and up to a
raised dining area beneath the trees. A play area with wooden play equipment was
located within view of the house, with access onto the new lawn for the children
to run around and play. A new wooden retaining wall was constructed along the
rear bank to make a large bed in which to plant shrubs for screening, together
with perennials for summer interest. Bark paths lead through the trees, between
areas of springtime planting, to a swing seat in the sunniest corner of the
garden.
