Initial consultation

Your ideas, your lifestyle, your tastes, your practical needs and your budget are all key to developing the ideal garden for you. I will visit you at home for this important first meeting.

Survey

Key overall measurements of your garden will be taken either at the initial consultation meeting or after the design proposal has been accepted. For smaller gardens I will carry out a basic site survey before design work commences so that a scale plan of your garden can be produced. For larger gardens or more difficult sites it will be necessary to employ a professional surveyor.

Design

Following the initial consultation I will prepare a quote for the design of your garden and once this is agreed an outline plan for your new garden will usually be created. The outline plan is a hand crafted and drawn scaled plan of your new garden showing the layout of all key elements, details of hard landscaping (features and materials) and the style of planting envisaged including the positioning of key specimen plants. We will meet again to discuss the outline plan and, following this, a detailed Masterplan will then be prepared, construction specifications produced and planting lists drawn up.

Building the Garden

There are various options: I can recommend local contractors and arrange for them to quote for the construction of your garden, or you may know someone who is able to do the work for you (or you may want to do it yourself).

The contractor will be employed by you but I can, if you wish, project manage the building work. I always prefer to be involved in the initial layout of the garden design on site and will be available if contractors have questions that arise during the build. Construction detail drawings and setting out plans can be produced when necessary for the contractor.

Planting Design and Planting

I can provide detailed Planting Plans for whole gardens or small borders. Consideration is given to the natural environment in the garden and plants will be chosen specifically to suit the style of garden, its soil and aspect and the individual position of plants within the garden. Specific attention is given, as appropriate, to effective planting combinations, seasonal interest, colour themes, the use of fragrance in the garden and the level of maintenance anticipated.

The Planting Service involves sourcing the plants, buying the plants, arranging for their delivery, preparing the ground for planting and the planting of the plants themselves. Contractors may be used for the planting of large tree and shrubs. Following planting, details of each of the plants (including how to look after them) and their position in the garden will be supplied.
