Before: The
garden was mainly laid to lawn, with a few shrubs around the boundaries. The
clients liked the existing patio to the rear of the house, but wanted another
seating area in a sunnier position. They also had a large trampoline for their
daughters, and wanted to be able to move it to different parts of the lawn so as
to avoid grass dying. An ornamental pond was also required, so that they could keep fish.
Design
Solution: The lawn was
reduced in size and reshaped into a more sinuous outline, whilst retaining
plenty of room for the girls’ trampoline. The generous borders around the lawn
were planted with a mixture of shrubs, perennials and grasses to soften the
boundaries and provide year-round interest. A new circular seating area was
constructed in the sunniest corner of the garden, with a quadrant pool to the
front crossed by a decking bridge. A large ornamental pot, a specimen tree and
an arbour provided new focal points around the garden.
